Debatten om, hvilken rolle islamister vil komme til at spille i et nyt Mellemøsten, har været præget af to narrativer. Ifølge det ene vil det nye Mellemøsten bliver et demokratisk Mellemøsten domineret af sekulære kræfter, mens islamisterne er 'so 20th Century'. Heroverfor finder man 'det bliver Iran om igen'-narrativet, ifølge hvilket valg blot vil bane vejen for et autokratisk teokrati domineret af islamister. På baggrund af en kritik af begge disse narrativer vil foredraget diskutere dels, hvordan islamisterne vil komme til at påvirke det nye Mellemøsten, herunder hvordan de vil klare sig ved de forstående valg, og dels hvordan et repolitiseret nyt Mellemøsten vil påvirke forskellige typer af islamister på den islamistiske scene.

Jon B. Alterman is director and senior fellow of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS). He teaches Middle Eastern studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and the George Washington University, and previously taught at Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. in history. Prior to joining CSIS, he served as a member of the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State and as an expert adviser to the Iraq Study Group. Alterman is the author or coauthor of four books on the Middle East and the editor of two more. His most recent article is "The Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted," The Washington Quarterly 34, no. 4 (2011), pp. 103-116.

The Arab Spring – recent democratizing revolts at least partly facilitated by the use of Web 2.0 communication technologies – presents us with remarkable examples apparently fulfilling proponents’ claims that new communication technologies will foster democratization around the globe. At the same time, however, recent historical surveys of Internet and Web use suggest that such democratization effects remain largely marginal exceptions to prevailing patterns of use.

The aim of this workshop is to explore and critically discuss alternative ways of understanding the complex interactions between the emergence and preservation of democratic values and contemporary forms of communication – where both modern (print and mass media) and new (digital and Internet-connected) communication technologies are credited with democratizing effects and potentials. Ostensible differences between the affordances and impacts of online vs. offline communication technologies constitutes one crucial springboard for such discussions – but this distinction should also be critically questioned in light of recent theoretical developments and empirical findings and events. Understanding these phenomena necessarily implicates the methodologies and findings of multiple disciplines and so the workshop welcomes contributions that apply diverse inter- and cross-disciplinary approaches to our general question.

Pieter Dronkers investigates how in today’s pluralistic democratic societies religious freedom is affected by the increasing political and social pressure on citizens to demonstrate and prove their allegiance to the civic community and the nation-state. He researches this relationship through an analysis of the contemporary political debate in the Netherlands on the compatibility of religious belonging and civic allegiance. At the seminar he will present the political-philosophical aspects of his project and discuss a draft chapter of his thesis.

For the Christians of Damascus the role of Paul plays a significant role. Commonly, the conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus is referred to as his 'Damascus experience' and this is something Christians will easily point out by referring to specific locations in Damascus and beyond, where Paul is said to have walked. The role of Paul is critical in that it places the Christian minority in a specific relation to Christianity writ large. It was here Christianity turned global.

In a recent Syrian film "Dimashq tatakallam - al-Qadis Boulos" or in English "Damascus Speaking - Saint Paul" a representation of the life and conversion of Paul is given. Here Paul is made to embody the change from hatred to love by divine intervention. In this talk I excavate the ramifications of the Paul presented in the film and in Syrian Christianity and combine it with the role and discussion surrounding Myrna Nazzour, a Christian Stigmatic, who as Paul claims to have received apparitions and messages of Christ, but Mary as well. In both instances a heightened sense of temporality is conjured with the role of Damascus as locality, but where the first is accepted the second is still contested. I relate these analytical concerns to recent anthropological interest in Christianity (cf. Robbins, Engelke, Coleman, Cannell) as well as recent discussions in continental philosophy on the role of Paul (cf. Taubes, Badiou, Agamben, Zizek).

Andreas Bandak is a PhD-fellow at Centre for Comparative Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen, and recipient of the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's Elite Research Travel stipend.

The seminar presentation highlights transformations of Sufi organizations and styles occurring both in the West and in the Muslim World and how these complicate the “global” and “local” as constructs. For example, the construct “ours” could indicate how Westerners have reinterpreted and institutionalized Sufism, perhaps re-exporting some elements back to Muslim societies. “Theirs,” on the other hand, suggests how Sufi-inspired movements originating in contemporary Muslim societies modify elements of the classical Sufi Orders (tariqas) in the face of modernization and globalization and subsequently attempt to expand transnationally.

Marcia Hermansen is Director of the Islamic World Studies Program and Professor in the Theology Department at Loyola University Chicago where she teaches courses in Islamic Studies and the academic study of religion. She received her Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in Arabic and Islamic Studies. In the course of her research and language training she lived for extended periods in Egypt, Jordan, India, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan and she conducts research in Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu as well as the major European languages.

Her work focuses on Islamic Thought, Sufism, Islam and Muslims in South Asia, Muslims in America, and Women in Islam. Her recent articles include "Hybrid identity Formations in Muslim America: The Case of American Sufi Movements" (2000),"Common Themes, Uncommon Contexts: The Sufi Movements of Khwaja Hasan Nizami (1878-1955) and Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927)" (2001), "What's American about American Sufi Movements?" (2004), "The Academic Study of Sufism at American Universities" (2007), and “Said Nursi and Maulana Ilyas: Examples of Pietistic Spirituality among 20th Century Islamic Movements” (2008).

Paneldebat ved Aarhus Universitet den 16. februar

De voldsomme begivenheder, der i disse dage præger Egypten og det øvrige Mellemøsten, kan tolkes som begyndelsen til omvæltninger i regionen, der i omfang kan sammenlignes med Jerntæppets fald. Hvilke streger der aktuelt bliver tegnet i det nye billede af Mellemøsten, og hvordan det færdige billede vil se ud, bliver diskuteret ved en paneldebat på Aarhus Universitet den 16. februar.

Ved debatten deltager eksperter fra Aarhus Universitet i Mellemøsten og den aktuelle situation. Det drejer sig om:

Mark Sedgwick, der er lektor ved Arabisk- og Islamstudier og dr.phil. i islamisk historie fra Universitetet i Bergen. Før han i 2007 kom til Danmark, har Mark gennem 20 år boet og arbejdet i Egypten på American University in Cairo. Mark forsker blandt andet i Egyptens moderne historie og politik, og udgav i 2010 en artikel med titel ”Measuring Egyptian Regime Legitimacy” som redegjorde for egypternes fremmedgørelse fra landets regime og konkluderede at regimet var i fare. Mark har også forsket i terrorisme og i religion i moderniteten og religiøse reformer.

Morten Valbjørn, der er adjunkt og har en ph.d.-grad fra statskundskab og en suppleringsuddannelse i mellemøststudier. I sin forskning arbejder han sig i øjeblikket især med spørgsmålet om, hvad der kendetegner et 'andet nyt Mellemøsten'. I den forbindelse har han publiceret en række artikler, der blandt andet beskæftiger sig med den såkaldte post-demokratiseringsstrømning i studiet af mellemøstlig politik; med spørgsmålet om, hvor forskellige typer islamismer bevæger sig hen i disse år og endeligt med hvad der kendetegner den aktuelle regionale orden.

Thomas Fibiger, der i 2010 blev ph.d. fra Aarhus Universitet på en afhandling om historieopfattelser, religiøs identitet og politik i Bahrain. Siden 2003 har han opholdt sig flere gange på Bahrain for at udføre etnografiske feltstudier, i alt 15 måneder. Et særligt fokus i Thomas Fibigers forskning er den betydning, politiske reformer fra starten af 2000-tallet har for identitetsdannelse og offentlig debat i Bahrain, samt hvordan shia- og sunni-muslimske politiske grupperinger har udviklet sig gennem disse reformer.

Debattens ordstyrer er Thomas Hoffmann, der er lektor ved Arabisk- og islamstudier.

Finding the Right Islam for the Post-Soviet Space: Between Purity, Tradition and the Modern World

Advocates of the "right Islam" present strident views, which are strongly dismissive of the "wrong" Islam. Advocates of purity claim that others have deviated from the true path and may be considered no longer really Muslim. Those who emphasize tradition claim that others would like to impose foreign and dangerously radical models and lack respect and understanding for the local tradition. The proponents of modernizing Islam argue that un-modernized Islam will drag Muslim societies backwards, preventing them from attaining the benefits that a Western model can offer. But most people who are deciding between the stark options that are put to them do not adopt an ideal model, but develop a complex set of orientations that represent a combination of the "ideal" orientations. This talk will look at the ways that the practices of post-Soviet Islam which constitute a reaction to these contradictory ideal models, but most often simply incorporate contradictions. The resulting picture is much more interesting and much less coherent than the ideal models.

John Schoeberlein is Lecturer in the Deptartment of Anthropology at Harvard University, as well as Director of the Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus, which he was instrumental in founding in 1993. His research focuses on identity, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, and community organization among the Islamic peoples of Central Eurasia. He has conducted a total of over six years of anthropological field research in various parts of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. During 2000-2001, he was Director of the Central Asia Project of the International Crisis Group.

Dr Schoeberlein's recent publications include “The Invention of Legitimacy: Struggles in Kyrgyzstan to Craft an Effective Nation-State Ideology” (2009, with Asel Murzakulova), “Talas’s Central Asian Cultural Contexts” (2007), “Doubtful Dead Fathers and Musical Corpses: What to Do with the Dead Stalin, Lenin and Tsar Nicholas?” (2004),and “Central Asia: A Host of Preventable Conflicts” (2002). His current research topics include the changing role of Islam in Central Eurasia including issues related to radical Islamism, secular and religious orientations, the politics of culture and national ideology, the impact of national state formation on identity in Central Asia, the impact of economic “reforms” on pastoralism communities, and the changing role of Russian culture in Post-Soviet contexts.

Professor Almond looks at five moments in the history of Europe where Muslims and Christians fought on the same side, and considers the wider implications of such alliances for our allegedly “Christian” Europe.

Ian Almond is a professor at Georgia State University and is the author of Two Faiths, One Banner (Harvard University Press, 2009), a general military history of Muslim-Christian alliances. After studying at the universities of Warwick and Edinburgh, he has taught and researched in Italy, Turkey, Germany, India and America. His other books include Sufism and Deconstruction (2004), The New Orientalists: Postmodern Representations of Islam (2007), and History of Islam in German Thought From Leibniz to Nietzsche (2009).

Employing an ethnographic notion of historicity, Thomas Fibiger's thesis discusses how people in Bahrain engage the past in their perceptions of the present and in their anticipation of the future. Bahrain is a heterogeneous island society where Sunni and Shia Muslims, Arab and Persian, religious and secular, national Bahrainis and migrants all search for legitimacy, inclusion and political influence. Various kinds of past are important to the political imagination of society for these people, as well as to their position in society and to their ideas about how society could and should develop. The thesis argues that the past is not only engaged to assert and hold on to specific identities and positions, but that the discussions and analyses of various historicities among Bahrainis, nourished by political reforms since 2002, contribute to develop and to challenge social identities and formations in society. The notion of historicity addresses the understanding of identity in a relationship between the past and the present, but this also involves changing and challenging imaginations of identity and the place of identities in society.

Faith and Power in the Holy Land:

Palestinian Theology and Church in a society of transformation after 1967.

Forsvaret finder sted fredag den 3. september kl. 13.00 i Auditorium 1, Bygning 1441, Det Teologiske Fakultet

The main task of the work is to show how Palestinian theology has developed as a local contextualized theology after 1967 and especially after the first Intifada in 1987. Palestinian theology adds its own dimension to the ecumenical discussion on theology of liberation, and the dissertation introduces the discussion by stating the surprising fact that international presentations of local contextualized and theology of liberation do not really mention Palestinian theology.
The idea is to discuss Palestinian theology as a contribution to the politi-cal transformation of Palestinian society and to interpret the content of Palestinian theology as a Christian response to the transformation of Palestinian society in general. In this respect Palestinian theology is interpreted as a contribution to, and a dimension of, the process of the establishment of an independent Palestinian nation-state.

Joshua Snider argues that Islamist radicalisation remains a problem not because religious militancy has a large constituency in Indonesia or because Indonesia has ethno-religious issues that make religiously based violence more or less likely or because Indonesia is a highly radicalized society. Rather, radicalization remains a pernicious issue in Indonesia due to the presence of an entrenched and committed social network with intergenerational ties and most importantly because the Indonesian state has to varying degrees created and used the voice of violent Islamism for its own institutional ends.

Joshua Snider is a doctoral candidate in politics at the University of Newcastle, Australia. His thesis explores the complexities of modern religious nationalism in South and Southeast Asia and specifically compares how the State has co-opted Islamist politics for secular ends in Indonesia and Pakistan. He has recently co-authored a book on global terrorism and is also working on a collaborative book project on global civil society and the governance state. Joshua Snider has taught at several universities in Australia and before embarking on his doctoral studies he worked for Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and then in the public affairs consulting industry in the United States.

Forholdet mellem Lutherdom og Islam har i de senere år påkaldt sig fornyet interesse ikke blot i daglige mediedebat men også akademisk. Islamforskeren Thomas Hoffmann vil med udgangspunkt i Adam S. Fransciscos monografi fra 2007 Martin Luther and Islam: A Study in Sixteenth Century Polemics and Apologetic vil præsentere reformationstiden om middelalderen som perioder, der engagerede sig mere teologisk og filologisk seriøst med islam end hidtil antaget i forskningen. I sit oplæg vil Thomas Hoffmann også inddrage Thomas Burmans Reading the Qur’ân in Latin Christendom, 1140-1560.

Omar Shargawi vandt for to år siden stor anerkendelse for sit voldsomme hævndrama "Gå med fred, Jamil!", der med nerve og autencitet portrætterede en hidtil ukendt del af Nørrebro. I sin nye film har Shargawi vendt sit stadig lige opmærksomme og vitale kamera fra Københavns kriminelle underverden mod den politiske og personlige historie i skikkelse af sin egen far. Shargawi senior, der også spillede med i sønnens første film, flygtede som barn fra Palæstina og endte efter mange års rejser i Danmark, hvor han stiftede familie. Nu længes han efter at gense Haifa. Men hvis man har oplevet lidt for meget af det hele og måske ikke længere er helt ung, er der langt fra Nørrebro til Israel, hvor barndommens hus i dag står. Gnaven og stædig, men dog en livsklog mand af et godt hjerte. En svær og spændende, men ikke umulig opgave for en søn, der også gerne vil forstå, hvor han selv kommer fra.

About Fethullah Gülen
As the founder of the Gülen Movement, estimated to have several million followers worldwide, the Turkish philosopher Fethullah Gülen (born 1941) is one of the contemporary world's most important religious leaders. Generally seen as a progressive figure, Gülen has been advocating and practising dialog between communities and religions since the 1990s. The seminar will hear a leading expert on this topic, Jill Carroll, and will then explore the implications and limits of dialog during a subsequent panel discussion. The seminar will be held in English.

About the lecturer and panelists
Dr Jill Carroll is a former Executive Director of the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University, Houston, Texas. She is the author of A Dialogue of Civilizations: Gülen's Islamic Ideals and Humanistic Discourse (2007) and The Savage Side: Reclaiming Violent Models of God (2002). Professor Viggo Mortensen holds the Chair in Global Christianity and Ecumenical Concerns at the Faculty of Theology, Aarhus University; his works include Det globale og det multireligiøse (2001) and Globaliseringen som udfordring til missionsteologi og økumenisk Teologi (1991). Dr Jesper Garsdal is one of the Coordinators of Aarhus University's Global Dialogue Project, and is the author of articles such as "Communal Sanctuaries: A Model for Inter-religious Dialogue and Conflict Resolution" (2007).

The lecture will offer Dr Shayegan's most recent reflections on the (im)possibility of ‘Islamic democracy,’ which Dr Shayegan in his earlier writings has seen as problematic. By entering the sphere of political history, religion, including Islam, is bound to lose its identity: "Religion falls into the trap set by [Hegelian] reason: trying to stand up against the West, it is Westernized; trying to spiritualize the world, it becomes secularized; and trying to deny history, it gets completely bogged down in it."

Dariush Shayegan, the winner of the 2009 Global Dialog Prize, is one of Iran’s most prominent comparative philosophers, cultural theorists, and literary writers. His work—written in French and Persian, translated into English, Arabic,Spanish, Turkish, German, and Italian—has received praise from scholars around the world. He is a specialist in Eastern metaphysics and Persian poetry, but also writes with unique scholarly breadth on the cultural history of the Muslim countries, India, Europe, China, Japan, and Latin America. He is known especially for his analyses of the cultural situation of contemporary Muslim societies. He was professor for comparative philosophy and Indology in Teheran, as well as director of the Ismaili Institute in Paris.

Koranen er vores langt vigtigste kilde til islams opståen, men den er en svær tekst for en historiker at bruge. Indtil for nylig var det kutyme altid at forstå den i lyset af den senere eksegetiske og historiske tradition, hvor man kunne finde alle de detaljerede oplysninger, der mangler i bogen. Men traditionen opstod senere og var ikke hvad vi ville kalde historisk inspireret, hvorfor det nu er blevet mere gængs i forskningen at prøve at forstå Koranen på grundlag af dens egne udsagn, i lyset af tidligere religiøse traditioner i området. Dette medfører imidlertid også problemer, ikke mindst fordi vi har så lidt litteratur fra før-islamisk Arabien, at vi må søge længere væk for at forstå de religiøse forestillinger, vi møder i teksten. Men metoden åbner nye perspektiver og viser i hvor høj grad det, vi mener at vide, i virkeligheden bygger på den senere tradition, så at meget historisk arbejde faktisk må gøres om igen. Foredraget vil illustrere problemerne og nogle af de nye perspektiver, der åbner sig.

A new documentary film, “Waziristan: A Culture under Attack,” will be shown.

Farhat Taj is PhD Research Fellow at the Center for Gender Research at the University of Oslo. She did her MPhil in Gender and Development at the University of Bergen, and is a well-known newspaper columnist (The News, Pakistan). Her columns focus on Talibanization in the North-West of Pakistan, her native region in the country. She has also directed a documentary film entitled “Waziristan: A Culture under Attack” which will be shown at the lecture. Farhat Taj is a member of the Totalitarian Network at the University of Oslo, which studies totalitarian ideas and regimes, including Talibanization. Her research interests include political Islam, gender, human rights, legal pluralism, multiculturalism, gender and development. And her research areas are South Asia, especially Pakistan and Afghanistan, and Scandinavia, especially Norway.

In a village in Egypt, young men dream of migrating to Europe where they hope to realise all the good things they lack at home: money, freedom, new horizons. In Vienna, Egyptian migrants long for back home. Their tales of migration reveal that the realities of living in Europe are more complex and nuanced than they themselves might have dreamt of. Paradise, both sides of this fictional dialogue tell, is always elsewhere. And perhaps happiness lies not in making old dreams come true, but in finding new ones.

Daniela Swarowsky is an Austrian artist and cultural producer working in Rotterdam. Since 2003, she has been focussing on migration in a range of art-, film- and video projects. Samuli Schielke is a Finnish anthropologist currently working on contemporary Egypt at ZMO (Zentrum Moderner Orient) in Berlin. They currently live and work in Rotterdam and Berlin.

In this lecture, the controversial Muslim thinker Muhammad Shahrur calls for a fundamental critique of Islamic culture and religion on the basis of a diagnosis of contemporary circumstances. He argues that the religious heritage must be critically read and interpreted anew, especially so as to improve the position of women in Islam by reforming sharia law in the light of social change and modern developments.

Born in Syria in 1938, Muhammad Shahrur published his first book on Islam only in 1990, but since then he has joined the small number of contemporary thinkers who have been tentatively identified as "the Luther of Islam."

[Shahrur's] approach to rethinking the meaning of the Qur'an entails a Kantian notion of public enlightenment by ideas, independent of the writer's status and thus to be evaluated on their persuasiveness alone. Despite the length of Shahrur's first book (over 800 pages) and its cost (half a month's salary for a government engineer in Egypt), it sold over 25,000 copies in authorized printings in Syria and many more in pirate and photocopy editions throughout the Arab Middle East, even though formally banned in many of the countries of the region.

Shahrur’s innovative interpretation of the Qur’an offers groundbreaking new ideas, based on his conviction that centuries of historical Islam, including scholarship in the traditional Islamic religious sciences, have obscured or even obliterated the Qur’an’s progressive and revolutionary message. That message is one that has endured through each period of human history in which Islam has existed, encouraging Muslims to apply the most contemporary perspective available to interpret the Qur’an’s meaning.

Muhammad Shahrur is in Denmark at the invitation of the "Nutidens Muslim" movement founded by Cherif El-Ayouty.

Bassam Tibi is professor of International Relations at the Center for International Affairs at the University of Göttingen, Germany. Professor Tibi was born in Damascus, moved to Germany in 1962 where he has olso held positions at the universities of Frankfurt and Heidelberg. Bassam Tibi has been a visiting scholar at Harvard, a visiting professor at Cornell University and has just been a visiting research professor at Yale University before retiring this summer. His work deals with conflict and modernity in Islamic civilisation with a focus on the Middle East, the Mediterranian region and Southeast Asia. His recent focus has been Islamic migration to Europe. Tibi is also an expert on jihadism’s irregular war end the religious fundamentalism of political Islam. For dealing with these issues, he established the discipline of Islamology. His latest publication is Islam’s Predicament with Modernity. Religious reform and cultural change (2009).

Donatella della Porta is professor of sociology in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. She has received a Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales and a PhD in political and social sciences at the European University Institute. She has conducted research also at Cornell and at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung. Her main research interests concern social movements, political violence, terrorism, corruption, police and policies of public order. On these issues she has conducted research in Italy, France, Germany and Spain.

Terrorism experts generally count four waves of modern terrorism, and consider us now to be seeing the "fourth wave" of "religious terrorism." But how religious can terrorism be? The lecture will review the standard understanding of religious terrorism, which includes early Hindu and Jewish groups as well as contemporary Japanese, Christian and Muslim groups, and ask what role religion really plays in terrorism. It will be argued that politics matters more than religion, but that religion does play an important part.

Ofte har man indtryk af, at islamisme er kvindeundertrykkende, og at radikaliserede islamistiske grupper udelukker kvinder fra deres aktiviteter. Men ved et nærmere studie kan der danne sig et billede af, at nogle islamistiske ideologer søger at appellere til kvinder, fordi de anser kvinder for at være et yderst vigtigt led i udbredelsen af den islam, de definerer som sand. Dette fremgår også som en af delkonklusionerne i rapporten ”At være muslimsk kvinde i Danmark. Baggrundsundersøgelse om muslimske kvinders ligestilling”, udført af ph.d. Tina Magaard for Ligestillingsafdelingen under Velfærdsministeriet. Denne rapport er baseret på en kvalitativ interviewundersøgelse blandt 34 muslimske piger og kvinder, samt 11 ikke-muslimske, kvindelige uddannelsesvejledere på uddannelsesinstitutioner med et vist optag af muslimske piger. Endvidere har to imamer medvirket. Rapportens formål er først og fremmest at kortlægge, hvordan muslimske piger og kvinder selv oplever problemstillinger relateret til ligestilling mellem kønnene, og hvorvidt islamistisk ideologi har indflydelse på de unge kvinders opfattelse af ligestilling. Radikalisering var ikke i fokus i det oprindelige oplæg til rapporten, men i løbet af feltarbejdet tegnede der sig et billede af, at kvinder kan spille en afgørende rolle i radikaliseringsprocesser, en problemstilling som forekommer underbelyst i forskningen. Det vil derfor blive diskuteret, hvad vi allerede ved, hvilket billede, der tegnes i rapporten ”At være muslimsk kvinde i Danmark”, og hvad vi har brug for at vide mere om i fremtiden.

Et af de mest centrale problemer inden for de seneste 30 års forskning i sociale bevægelser har været at forklare, hvorfor nogle mennesker vælger at tage del i aktivisme, mens andre – flertallet – ikke gør det. Forskningen har primært fokuseret på den rød-grønne og rettighedsaktivismen. I den nuværende situation er der imidlertid en voksende interesse for radikaliserings- og rekrutteringsprocesserne i forbindelse med islamistisk aktivisme. Indtil nu har man kun beskæftiget sig sporadisk med religiøst inspireret aktivisme inden for forskningen i sociale bevægelser. Heller ikke forskningen i politisk islam – et akademisk vækstområde siden 11. september – har indgået i en systematisk dialog med litteraturen om sociale bevægelser. Med henblik på at skabe mere tværfaglig debat præsenterer dette paper en oversigt over de eksisterende teorier og resultater inden for forskningen i sociale bevægelser, som drejer sig om aspekter ved rekruttering og radikalisering. Med baggrund i denne oversigt fremlægger paperet en foreløbig liste over områder, hvor teorier om sociale bevægelser kan være særlig frugtbare i forhold til en analyse af islamisk aktivisme og radikalisering. Paperet skelner mellem fire forskellige typer forklaringer på rekruttering og radikalisering: 1) Individuelle eller social-psykologiske forklaringer; 2) relationelle eller netværksbaserede forklaringer; 3) strukturelle forklaringer og 4) medie- og diffusionsforklaringer.

Thomas Olesen er lektor, Ph.D. på Institut for Statskundskab, Aarhus Universitet. Hans forskningsinteresser er sociale bevægelser, medier og globalisering. "American Muslims and the Challenge of Pluralism"

The new diaspora discourse on pluralism in North America displays a strong awareness of the need for a pluralistic interpretation of the Qur’anic verses that have been utilized by extremists to justify terrorist actions. This is seen as crucial not only to assuage the doubts and apprehensions of the general public, but also--in a more important way--to address the reality of diversity within the North American Muslim community itself, and the challenge of forging a united constituency. Islam is projected as a way of life, a culture, and so as providing guidance on issues of "diversity, unity, harmony, tolerance and peace."

Yvonne Y. Haddad is Professor of the History of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Al-Walid bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University. Her fields of expertise include twentieth-century Islam; intellectual, social and political history in the Arab world; and Islam in North America and the West. Currently, Professor Haddad is conducting research on Muslims in the West and on Islamic Revolutionary Movements. She also teaches courses on Muslim-Christian Relations and Arab
Intellectuals. Professor Haddad has authored and edited more than twenty one books, including Not Quite American? The Shaping of Arab and Muslim Identity in the United States (2004), Mission to America: Five Islamic Sectarian Movements in North America (1993, with Jane Smith), Islamic Values in the United States: A Comparative Study (1987, with Adair Lummis), and Contemporary Islam and the Challenge of History (1982).

“From Secular Poetics to Secular Politics — and Back?”

This presentation attempts to thematize the ongoing tension between a grass roots level of ‘secular poetics’ inherent in the long term construction of the social bond (where transcendence is either minimized or instrumentalized) and the ‘secular politics’ that originated from a specific momentum within early modern transformations in Western Europe. Focusing on this tension between the different ways in which secularisation proceeds in different domains can, Salvatore suggests, be an alternative way to analyze what is conventionally regarded as the dialectic between more reified entities or forces like ‘religion’ and ‘politics’ or between ‘nationalism’ and ‘transnationalism’ (or globalism). The lecture will first provide the sketch of a genealogy of this fundamental tension particularly with regard to Europe and then some examples concerning the way key Muslim actors contribute to evidence such a tension both in Europe and on a global level.

Armando Salvatore is Associate Professor, Sociology of Culture and Communication, University of Naples – L’Orientale, and Senior Research Fellow (Heisenberg Fellow), Institute of Social Sciences, Humboldt University, Berlin, and Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, Essen. His present research explores the symbolic, political and practical nexus between religious traditions and secular formations across Eurasia in the context of the theoretical approach to ‘multiple modernities.’ He also works on communication, media, and the public sphere. Among his most recent books (authored, edited, and co-edited), Islam and Modernity: Key Issues and Debates (2009), The Public Sphere: Liberal Modernity, Catholicism, Islam (2007), Islam in Process: Historical and Civilizational Perspectives (2006), Religion, Social Practice, and Contested Hegemonies (2005) and Public Islam and the Common Good (2004).

Beskrivelse af arrangement: De senere års debat om islamisme har fokuseret på, om det er nødvendigt at skelne mellem forskellige typer af islamistiske bevægelser. Morten Valbjørn ser kritisk på den populære modstilling mellem radikal islamisme på den ene side og moderat islamisme på den anden. Som del af regeringens "Arabiske Initiativ" sendes Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen til Cairo med sin familie. Hans opgave er at skabe dialog med Mellemøsten. Opgaven kompliceres af tegningekrisen. Han skal mægle og skabe dialog mellem forskellige politiske overbevisninger og kulturelle forståelser. I et visuelt nærværende sprog inviterer Det Arabiske Initiativ os ind i en række dialoger, hvor forbundne temaer om religion og politik diskuteres.

As a part of the Danish government's "The Arab Initiative", one of Europe's leading experts on Islam, the Danish scholar, Dr. Jakob Skovgaard-Petersen, is sent to Cairo with his family. His mission is to create a dialogue between the Middle East and Denmark. Complicated by the crisis following the Danish Mohammad cartoons, his brief is to mediate between differing political attitudes and cultural perceptions. In a visually engaging style, The Arab Initiative, invites us into a number of dialogues discussing related themes on religion and politics.

Dr Andrew Hoskins' research focuses on the theoretical and empirical investigation of conflict, security and memory in today’s ‘new media ecology’. He is currently Principal Investigator of two projects: ‘Legitimising the Discourses of Radicalization: Political Violence in the New Media Ecology,’ and ‘Mediating and Commemorating the 2005 London Bombings’.
